Technical Case Study: Immersive Multimedia Art and High-Performance Video Mapping in Berlin

This case study outlines the technical framework and creative technology services provided by Eitan Rieger for large-scale video projection mapping and interactive art installations in Berlin.

1. High-Lumen Projection Engineering

For large-scale architectural mapping, I utilize high-performance Panasonic projectors ranging from 10,000 to 30,000 lumens.

  • Large-Scale Surfaces: A 30K lumen projector paired with a wide-angle lens was deployed to cover expansive walls with high-resolution imagery.

  • Long-Range Projection: Using telephoto lenses, I have projected onto towers from significant distances. The concentrated light intensity from these specialized optics allowed the visuals to remain visible even before sunset.

2. Multi-Projector Synchronization & Live Performance

I use Resolume Arena as the core media server for real-time video manipulation.

  • Hardware Sync: My workstations utilize multi-output graphics cards to drive and synchronize multiple projectors simultaneously for seamless 360° or wide-format environments.

  • Live Improvisation: In collaboration with musicians (piano and electronic generators), I perform live visual sets using a Launchpad Pro. This allows for real-time improvisation, where video clips and effects are triggered in sync with the musical performance.

3. Interactive Systems & Sensor Integration

I design interactive art installations that bridge the gap between physical movement and digital output through a variety of input methods:

  • Motion & Depth Tracking: Utilizing Kinect sensors for skeletal tracking and motion-based interaction.

  • Environmental Sensors: Integration of ultrasonic sensors for proximity detection and microphones for audio-reactive visual responses.

  • Custom Physical Interfaces: I build large-scale hardware inputs, such as hand-built floor switches. These act as giant keys that allow participants to trigger events or animations by jumping on them.

  • Connectivity: I integrate microcontrollers using Bluetooth communication and MIDI protocols to translate sensor data into real-time visual triggers.

4. Dynamic Lighting & Cloud Rendering

For integrated light effects, I utilize the Light Creator platform. This system uses a specialized hardware device to render complex light animations and effects online, which are then synchronized with the video projection mapping for a unified multimedia experience.
